Five Anniversaries
There were several anniversaries in January. 50 years ago I was snatched out of a war in the middle of Laos to go study rice in the Philippines. 49 years ago I married Sou in Laos on her sister's front porch. 48 years ago Sou, I and our oldest son Tony left Laos with with the rumble of B-52 bombs falling on Cambodia as a major motivator for getting out. 40 years ago the Vietnamese drove Pol Pot out of Phnom Penh ending four years of hell. 20 years ago Mak Sou, I and our youngest daughter, landed in Cambodia.
When I arrived in Laos in 1968, they gave me a ticket extension to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, because it was the most beautiful and developed city in Asia. My ticket expired before I could make the trip, and by 1978 Phnom Penh was a 'Ghost Town'. When Sou and I and Hannah came to Cambodia in 1998, peace had just been declared, and the country was a mess. Now, Phnom Penh is again prospering, but more importantly Cambodia is coming to Christ. A lot has happened in 50 years!
