Kampong Leaeng district is located in Kampong Chhnang Province just north of Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. I made this girl, Dany, a promise. “I will never leave Cambodia until your leg is healed!” Dany was a crippled girl with two healthy siblings from a poor family in rural Steung Treng Province. Her father died when she was young and her mother re-married twice. As an infant she learned to walk late and was slower and weaker than other kids her age. Though she and her family did not know it, she had tuberculosis of the bones. “Thank God He Ain’t What He Was!” I do know this is the way I feel regarding most of the lives FCOP has impacted in Cambodia. We have two orphan kids with the nickname “Elephant”, and the name came with a condition they were born with called ‘meningoencephalocele’ which is a hemorrhage of brain tissue through a hole in their cranium near their eye, and it forms a trunk looking appendage, thus the name, “Elephant”.
