Those Damn Dams!
Those Damn Dams! The first time I heard about the international effort to close all orphan homes by 2023, pushed by UNICEF and other well meaning, but misinformed organizations, I knew that we were in for funding troubles. These giants have virtually unlimited resources compared to FCOP and I realized it was going to directly affect the support of our kids. As a result, FCOP faced the fact that a substantial portion of funding for orphan care would have to be raised in Cambodia. We came up with the "Rice Production Enterprise". All of our projections were based on historic data and done in 2017, I finalized the plan with projections for $1,500,000 USD to complete the project. We secured the 1000 acres and have made huge improvements but we did not anticipate this: Look at the number of hydroelectric dams in 2016 vs 2019. There is a virtual wall obstructing all water flowing into Cambodia. We projected supplemental irrigation from reservoirs fed by a river that runs by our land and before 2019 had never gone dry. Now, we must prepare to do much larger water storage with more conservative, possibly sprinkler irrigation, to reduce evaporation. Costs will be substantially increased. We need your prayers and help. The rice farm project looks poised for the saving of many lives in Cambodia where a man-made drought is being created by what is being called “China’s addiction to dam construction”
