We Made It

We finished our rice harvest on New Year's Day. Our farm crew worked up to 23 hour days, the last three days to stay ahead of fires set by set by some drunken farmer trying to kill rats. Our staff rushed to scrape off 15 meter bare zones between the fire and our land with our three bulldozers and although thousands of acres burned, we were spared any loss. One of our neighbors lost everything. He'd just finished drying and bagging an 80 ton crop when the fire came and consumed it all. He broke down and cried. We harvested with five combines this year, and have decided that until we have irrigation in place for evenly spaced cropping, we may have to add more. December saw the building of a machine shed, and the ordering of additional grain storage equipment. We move steadily forward. It turned out to be a pretty good year.
