The Triumphant Trip

Sou and I spent the last half of May and the first half of June in the US and Shanon was there for all of June, but it was a trip of great victory for us! Sou and I would not have been able to go, but for the generosity of a great pastor and church who purchased our tickets. We left Cambodia in a tough position. We have no food products being imported to feed our 2,500 orphans and widows and our rice was planted but needed fertilizer which was five times more expensive than last year. We must …

Water and Diesel

Seven large diesel pumps are running night and day, consuming $1,000USD of fuel every day. We must build the reservoir, but until we do, we are dependent upon the rivers. Unfortunately, the Chinese dams are still filling their reservoirs and water is not flowing. What started as a wet spring has turned into a dry summer and our rice is thirsty. So, we built three more large 16″ pumps. Pray for rain on our rice! Rains around Cambodia are very spotty this year, with some localities experiencing flooding and others drought. Thanks to the generosity of so many, we were …

Broken Down and Busted!

There comes a time in the life of everything mechanical that it reaches the point of ‘no-return’. Our rice mill in Balang which is being called upon to perform better than ever before finally spit out its last grain of rice. Purchased well used in 2001, it has served us well for 21 years. Finally, with holes worn in many of the screens in the ‘shaker box’, the bucket elevator slats worn paper thin and most of the tubes and elbows ground through with multiple tons of those miniature grindstones called ‘paddy’. We decided it was time to send the …

100 Years of the Protestant Faith

On June 25th, a group of donors got together and funded a meeting at the largest meeting hall in Cambodia. It was simply to prepare everyone for the 100th anniversary of the Protestant faith coming to Cambodia. I remember in 1999, shortly after we arrived, an elderly pastor arrived and asked to join our movement. He explained that his name was Keo Pawn, from Battambang, and that his father had been the first Cambodian Protestant Pastor in Cambodia in 1923. He had been so moved by what FCOP was doing for children that he wanted to be part of it. …

One in 10,000! And the Power of Prayer

It was gratifying to see the FCOP Churches function as was discussed at the FCOP Annual Meeting. The kids FCOP raised are now the leaders of the movement, and without any foreign presence in Cambodia managed to navigate through some turbulent times and carry on the work they do best, seeing Cambodia come to Christ. A new first occurred under their watch, what I would call a, “spiritual abduction”. A 27 year old man disappeared from his home in the middle of the night with no explanation.  His family, members of the Siem Reap Church, were living on land that …

Spiritual Power and Deception

I started working as a “contract” employee of the U.S. Embassy in Laos out of college in 1968. During the next 3 years, I participated in the “Secret War”. I was never a C.I.A. employee but I observed the illegal, deceptive stuff they were involved in and believe it has only gotten worse over the years. I’m ashamed of what the US intelligence community has evolved into. For the past few decades, they have upended the peace of the world.  During the 1980s, Cambodia was run by the Cambodian Peoples Party working with the former Soviet Union as their main …

A Line In The Sand

In late April, the Cambodian government announced that it was seeking to bring Chinese A.I. (artificial intelligence) into the country. Then last weekend, I saw something in the news that shook me to the core. It was a video shot from a drone in Shanghai, China, filming the streets of the large city, which is central to a greater area which encompasses about 364,000,0000 people that have been under total lockdown since April 4th. No people or vehicles were seen at midday; the streets were empty. A lone, robotic dog walked down the street. It walked at a normal pace for …

Value of Labor

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”(Col. 3:23-24) Here is some wisdom from Abraham Lincoln in 1861: “The prudent, penniless beginner in the world labors for wages awhile, saves a surplus with which to buy tools or land for himself, then labors on his own account another while, and at length hires another new beginner to help him. This is the just and generous and prosperous system which opens the way to all, …

Farewell From Sam

As I enter the last number of days of working in the FCOP Cambodia office, one thing comes to mind: Gratefulness. I have been blessed since the first day I arrived in Cambodia in 2010 to work and serve with FCOP. In addition, I will always be grateful for the invaluable role FCOP played in my wife’s survival story, being taken in by FCOP as a young girl. On both accounts, I am indebted to FCOP. Speaking on behalf of my family, we know that although my daily office hours will stop, we look forward to continuing in relationship with …

Easter Throughout Cambodia

For almost 2,000 years, the Christian Church has celebrated the death and resurrection of Jesus as the most important moment in history; and in fact it is! Without Jesus taking the penalty of our sins upon Himself and suffering the punishment of death in our place, each of us would be subject to eternal death and the works of the devil, but His death means so much more because He actually defeated death itself! Our Lord and Savior waged war on our behalf and now holds the keys to death and Hades (Revelation 1:18). During the Easter season, FCOP churches …

Return of Khmer New Year Celebrations

After being cancelled for the past two years due to COVID-19, Cambodians were allowed to celebrate Khmer New Year which is the largest holiday in the country. This three day holiday marks the conclusion of the dry, harvest season and welcomes the beginning of the rainy, planting season. This holiday has great significance culturally in that it is a time where individuals travel to their home provinces to spend quality time with their family and friends while honoring their ancestors and family heritage. For the children in our care, FCOP is their family! At our National Training Center that houses …

Being Good Stewards

As I write this, some of our Khmer staff are currently at the Snule Church Refuge Center in Kratie province building a cafeteria and new kitchen. This cafeteria and kitchen will allow for the home staff to be able to prepare healthy, clean food and the kids will be able to eat this freshly prepared food in a dry, clean, safe eating environment. It might seem like a simple thing, but the effects are profound. Having these important resources makes such a difference in the morale and health of those living at the home as well as bringing a sense …
