School Uniform Distribution

A navigation course is set in stages; from check point to check point. “True North” for our students begins with enrollment. Unfortunately, you cannot attend school without a uniform, and for many poor families and orphans there is simply no money for such a luxury. The result? Kids don’t go to school. Stage one: get them through the door. That requires one functional uniform, and supposedly a pair of black lace top shoes. Some poor districts will overlook the shoes. But then, stage two is to keep them in school, and that requires basic supplies. School uniforms and basic supplies …

Cambodian Thanksgiving

No matter which way you turn a compass, the needle always comes back to “North”. Our hearts can be wounded, our bodies made sick, and our surroundings become miserable, but as God guides us, and we have the sense to listen, we can’t help but wind up back on course in awe of His provision. We celebrated “Thanksgiving” with orphans at Chom Chao on Nov. 22nd. I have never seen two 24 pound turkeys, with all the trimmings and 30 large pizzas disappear so fast; virtually gone in five minutes. It made those of us who take such a holiday for …

All I want for Christmas!

The Grinch (me?) is a grouch! Right? Its “Christmas shoebox” time! (If you are not familiar with this program, Samaritan’s Purse, a ministry founded by Franklin Graham, seeks to provide orphans with a shoebox full of small presents at Christmas. ) It’s a sweet idea! I wish I was clever enough to think of a fund raiser that made me come out looking like Mother Teresa, all my critics like Scrooge, and fund FCOP for a year to come. My hat goes off to Franklin! Now, Samaritan’s Purse does good things with the money they receive, and the kids like …

Wedding Shoebox?

Cambodian orphans may not expect presents at Christmas, but they do want a wedding. Right now, I need a wedding fund. How do you get 3000 orphans married? Two at a time! Two of our kids went to the altar last week. Can you put a wedding in a shoebox? Someone figure this out for me. Please!

Baptisms with Umbrellas

The medical teams increased the need for water baptisms, and there were opportunities in almost every province of Cambodia last month. Actually, you could almost just stand outside during the past few weeks and get dunked from the sky falling. It’s kind of funny to see people going to their baptism with umbrellas.

Playgrounds

We continue to put up the “Kid magnets,” what you call playgrounds, in as many of our church homes as we can afford. They always produce the desired result. Kids all over the country are drawn to our churches, and once there, the kids just meet Jesus. That’s about all I have to say about that.

Yohan Funeral

One of our Board of Directors, Yohan (John), the builder of 46 of our buildings had a massive stroke. Yohan got saved while he was working as a construction laborer at our church home in Toule Dam Na; he literally saw the fire of God fall in January, 2000 and came to faith in Christ on the spot.  He was the only contractor who never cheated us; a major donor to the church, he used his 2 1/2 ton truck to make multiple trips each Sunday to bring people to church. The night before he died, Yohan received a ranting, …

Orphan Joy

Farmers know that a new season is coming, and after a disaster all you can say is, “Praise God it is over! Happy days are here again!” I’m not talking about rice production. Church attendance where our former National Leader used to pastor has doubled. Five new home groups have been formed in the town where his brother was supervisor. Attendance at the church where our rice mill was located is up ten fold, and of the 4000 + pastors in Foursquare, not one has chosen to follow him. “When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and …

Snake Killer

You’ve probably heard the old story about the three pawed dog that limped into an old west saloon, plops down his six-gun on the bar and says to the bartender, “I’m looking for the man that shot my Paw” (now to those not familiar with American colloquialisms “Paw” is an expression used for “father” and, is of course, the word used correctly for a dog’s foot). If you’re over 50 you’ll know that the standard theme in many old western movies was one of a vengeful son looking for the killer of his father, which makes this more of a …

FCOP’s War on Trafficking

As I watched the Easter evening pageant unfold, I couldn’t hep but think of the alternatives for these 10,000 young people, especially the young women. A few days earlier, Jenny Robinson, (FCOPI Staff Member) called me regarding a response to a potential donor concerning  our “War on Trafficking.” She tweaked and  transcribed the phone response and put it on her blog. Much better than my rant! It’s a good read.  See Jenny’s Blog

Traffic “Jam”

On 11-11-11, bands and fans united to put a stop to human trafficking. Traffic-Jam was the theme of a “Prayer-Concert” we did for the factory girls in Cham Chao. There was a packed house and a great number of the girls in our anti-trafficking dorm participated.

Hypocrisy

I’d rather be friends. Why can’t UNICEF come alongside those that are actually doing something and say, “What can we do to help you?” Are you thinking of  “Trick or Treating” for UNICEF?  Don’t!  According to Jesus, the Pharisees “…Bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.  But all their works they do to be seen by men.” Now, if I can be so bold as to apply that to UNICEF, all I can say is that, “Truer words have never been spoken.” They seem to think they own the …
