No Teams? Improvise

For many years FCOP has relied on visiting foreign teams to come help rebuild our deteriorating Church/Homes. Forty kids, acid rain, aging concrete and jungle growth can soon turn the best homes into a disaster. Sam Tolle has learned that foreign churches can sponsor virtual teams, through which they fund Cambodian workers. The sponsoring churches then connect with the Cambodian churches via the internet to impact the kids lives with testimonies (which we can interpret), develop relationships, and let these kids that have been orphaned or abandoned realize that someone half a world away loves them and knows they are …

The Frozen Chosen

You may not have seen my recent posts on Facebook but Sou and I just returned to Cambodia on Thursday, February 17th, after an emergency trip to see our daughter, Hannah, who was suffering from a condition known as “pre-eclampsia” upon the birth of our grandson, Oliver Theodore Olbrich-Rowley. Hannah is doing fine now; PTL! Granny Sou has a new love in her life! We had a wonderful time with our family; we were able to see all four of our children and many of our grandchildren. During our two weeks and five days in North America, Sou and I …

A Wonderful Life

Christmas has been gone for a month and many of you have re-watched, “It’s A Wonderful Life” for the umpteenth time. There is a line where the angel tells George Bailey, “Each man’s life touches so many other lives.” My friend, Dale Downs, missionary to Brazil moved into heaven on New Years Eve. He died of Covid-19. In the fall of 1998, I was serving as President of the Board for Camp Hickory (the Foursquare camp in the old Great Lakes District). I’d sensed the call of God to missions and back then you jumped through a lot of hoops to get a …

Home Refurbishing

Any homeowner knows about maintenance and upkeep of their house. We have over 100 homes that house orphaned and abandoned children. We often use visiting teams to help with some of the upkeep and projects. Without having a foreign team in the last two years and funding for projects taking a hit because of it, we’re in a deep hole trying to keep our church home buildings in good repair. We’re grateful for churches who have done virtual teams with us (if you’re interested, feel free to contact us) and for our own staff who we send all over Cambodia …

Rat Race

In order to grow dry season rice, we have to first solve the irrigation issue, control weeds, insects and diseases, then, our number one problem is rats. Right now we are finishing up harvest of our last planting. It is a good crop which was planted just after the floods in early October. The combines are racing the rats!  Paul Mok, our rice farm manager, is a master chef. He will spend hours concocting a special, delicious rat feast. He boils unmilled rice for hours with a special flavoring like fermented fish and a deadly, Chinese made, poison. Paul never …

End of an Era

In mid January we unloaded our last container of Manna Pack. It is a nutritious, rice based meal with protein, vitamins and minerals added. The freight costs and shipping difficulties are killing us. With regard to supply chain issues, it now costs us nearly $10,000US to receive a 20 ton load of Manna Pack from the US interior to our Training Center in Phnom Penh. Domestic rice price are under the government thumb and our own raw rice is selling at our farm for only about $225 per ton. With a 62% milling percentage and a $50/ton milling cost, that brings our locally milled rice …

Rice Farm vs CCP

FCOP actually started to harvest in early October and the rice was yielding about 10 tons per hectare. The rains had slowed and it looked like we were going to reap a blessing. Sadly, the Chinese funded dams on the Thai border were opened and we were flooded with a wall of water that forced the water eight inches over the top of our dikes, which we raised this year but obviously not enough. Overnight we went from a beautiful crop to a lake. It was heartbreaking. This year has been a struggle for our crops, but there is always …

FCOP’s 112th Church Building

With thousands of home churches and cell groups throughout the nation, FCOP was excited to officially dedicate its 112th church building in Cambodia. This church is the first house of worship in the entire village; there isn’t even a Buddhist temple. This church congregation began as a Bible study for employees of a small shop at a local market managed by Chaya, one of the orphans FCOP had raised. Over several months, the church plant that was meeting in the shop became too large to meet there any longer averaging almost 100 people each Sunday. Pastor Chaya has been traveling …

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 2021 was a year of great challenge yet God remained faithful. In spite of the global pandemic, we continue to see the Church grow and the good news of Jesus shared in some of the most unreached areas of the nation. We are excited for 2022 as we are believing it will be a year of miracles, continued growth and provision.  As we reflect on our 23 years in Cambodia, we are amazed at all that has been accomplished by building the church through helping orphans and widows. We hope you …

The Murder of the Mekong: China Destroys Southeast Asia’s Most Important River

December 15, 2021/THE EPOCH TIMES John Mac Ghlionn is a researcher and essayist. His work has been published by the likes of the New York Post, Sydney Morning Herald, Newsweek, National Review, The Spectator US, and other respectable outlets. He is also a psychosocial specialist, with a keen interest in social dysfunction and media manipulation. Many have wondered how such radical climate change has happened to Cambodian agriculture since 2016. We are “ping ponged” between extremes by a controlling China. We must get control of our own water. The following story supports what I’ve been saying: China is using the Mekong …

From Victims to Heroes

Eight year-old Sane came to live at Chom Chao Church Refuge Center a little over a year ago. He started out as a shy young boy with many fears and a great sense of insecurity. Through being given structure, parental figures that love and support him, he’s experienced the Father’s love and it has changed his life. It’s been said, “Children are great imitators… so give them something great to imitate”~ anonymous. We take this motto to heart as we actively live out the Great Commission to make disciples as well as to care for orphans and widows. Sane’s survival …

Control Water, Control Life

When I was growing up on our family dairy farm in Illinois and we’d lose a crop, I remember my dad saying, “Tis enough to make a grown man cry!” FCOP raised the best crop of rice we’ve ever had. We actually started to harvest and it was running about 10 tons per hectare. The rains had slowed and it looked like we were going to reap a blessing. Sadly, the Chinese funded dams on the Thai border were opened and we were flooded with a wall of water that forced the water eight inches over the top of our …
