Painful Reality Check

When the unfortunate news came in, it hit us like a ton of bricks. This very same day that Thany’s daughter came into the world we lost another. Veasna had grown up with us and was one of the first orphans we cared for in the Mondolkiri province. We sent him to trade school at Don Bosco and he moved on to open and run a café where he was from. He was killed in a motorcycle accident. These are always painful times for us. You would think that with 18,000 kids that the loss of one would not hurt …

Family is Everything

Kheuon’s earliest memory is of his mom. She was always sick, and his dad faithfully cared for her. Then his mom died and, not long after, his dad died as well. Kheuon remembers his grandparents looking for help, but their village and region were so impoverished that no one could take in three extra mouths to feed, including his grandparents. He and his two brothers were temporarily taken care of by their grandparents but the grandparents didn’t treat them well, stopping just short of kicking them out. Kheuon and his brothers were often sick. When they felt weak and hungry, they …

East Meets West

“East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet”. Kipling’s quip of nearly 130 years ago is still often quoted, but after 46 years of marriage and spending 20 years in SE Asia (that’s 29% of my life) and Mak Sou, born here, spending 41 years of her life in SE Asia (that’s 60% of her life), we’ve figured out why this is such a mystery. The reason is a matter of the spiritual realm versing the physical realm. Allow me to explain: When we came to Cambodia in 1998, in virtually every village of Cambodia, …

There’s A Miracle In You

You may not realize it, but, Jesus was more “Eastern” than “Western.” There is a miracle in you! I wish I had time to talk to each one of you and tell you about the miracles of provision, and breakthroughs, God has given us through your generosity and His Grace. If you have 30 seconds, my daughter-in-law, Sandi (Tony’s wife) says it better than I ever will in a clip from her new album! Have a quick look and listen!

Physical Versus Spiritual

Sorting out the demonic from the physical can be difficult and there is always crossover. Historically, September is by far the wettest month of the year in Cambodia. The first 12 days were dry and on the seventh of September the chief meteorologist for Accuweather released a very pessimistic (physical) forecast of heat and drought for the region. We lost about 75 acres to drought for the second time (about 10% of the crop). Paul Mok, our Farm manager, was being tormented with spirits manifesting at night and keeping him awake. He even had some of the workers sleep next …

A Mystery We Can’t Explain

Some things can’t be explained. Pastor El Sim’s daughter died of Leukemia about ten years ago. The next day our District Supervisor, Long Kit, went to conduct the funeral. When he arrived he knelt down next to the body to pray with El Sim. The daughter, dead nearly two days, rose up, and is still alive and cancer free after 10 years, and that’s after two failed bone marrow transplants in Australia! Fast forward 10 years to September 2015. Maybe, the problem was that we didn’t know the specific diagnosis for Elizabeth, a 14 year-old girl from the Krava Church …

Lions Attack

Nineteen Young Lions returned to Tumnup Island for more ministry. Despite the fact that most of the people have received Christ through EL Sim’s ministry, there were pockets of demonic oppression, and some groups that had resisted the gospel. The Lions determined to take on the problem. There was a special commissioning service at our main Training Center and many of them received specific visions and instructions. The results validated their spiritual astuteness. They discovered that there was a wide diversity in the ages of those who needed Christ, so they broke into three teams; one for adults, one for …

New Churches

Three new church buildings are under construction. This month, four large, 100 member plus, home churches donated land for buildings. These pastors stood at the front of our recent general training, and handed over the deeds. Now, we need a way to help them get these buildings up! There were several other smaller, local, training sessions this month, involving about 170 key leaders. At one training, a pastor who had been paralyzed for two years from a stroke and had every treatment the medical profession could deliver, was healed and walked out of the meeting.

Joy is Like a Medicine

The joy of the Spirit is like a medicine! Playgrounds are kid magnets. We had a church donate $2000 for a playground and were able to multiply that value by almost 10 fold with a donation form a resort that was changing out a playground. This set is bound for Prey Krang in Prey Veng province. Bob and Christal Hollandsworth returned to help us out for at least eight months and we are all happy to see them! They rebuilt that play-set and made it look like new. It is bound to produce great spiritual fruit!

Dethrone the Demonic

A big problem with microenterprises is this: (It’s a physical issue) If you have one farmer raise quail in a village he can get rich, two can make money, three break even, and four go broke! It’s the lack of refrigeration, food processing, and transportation to large markets that is problematic. One reason the fishing industry thrives, is that fish can be sun dried and transported to markets. The same is true for our mushrooms. The quickest way to boost people out of poverty, and prevent human trafficking, is to attack the economic causes. Despite all the claims, the biggest cause …

Combine Swap

Another blessing was our rice combine. It was made in Thailand and due to the low rice prices the past few years, the company went broke. No parts! No repairs! We were concerned that it was as worthless as scrap iron (physical issue). We prayed, and the “Spiritual” trumped the “physical!” One custom harvester had five machines like ours, and he wanted to buy ours so he could support his operation. We sold it for enough to purchase a new Kubota combine, and because of the size of our potential crop, we bought the second machine for less than the …

No Fear

To alter a few quotes: “And though he be but little, he is fierce!” -Wm. Shakespeare “You don’t tug on superman’s cape You don’t spit into the wind You don’t pull the mask off that old lone ranger And you don’t mess around with “Spud”! –Jim Croce My wife Sou had a dream about a giant snake trying to destroy us, after quite a struggle, she chased it off but didn’t kill it. Then, right in front of our office, three days ago, this 15 foot Python snake appears, and I see Spud, our little Jack Russell dog, take on this snake that weighed ten times …
